What is Orienteering?

What is OrienteeringOrienteering is a sport that involves navigating your way through varied terrain and vegetation with the aid of a map and a compass. Participants navigate to a series of checkpoints marked on a map. The goal is to find each point on the map as quickly as you can.

Orienteering is perfect for anyone seeking to add a little exercise and excitement to their life. The expense is low, the fun is intense, and it only takes a short time to learn the basics. Anyone can compete regardless of experience, ability, age or physical condition (participants run or walk). Orienteering is an ideal family activity either as a recreational activity or as high adventure sport. With scenic locations, exercise, mental challenge and sociability, orienteering offers something for everyone. Enjoy the outdoors and get off the beaten track in a safe and fun way - go orienteering!

There are many different kinds of orienteering. Foot orienteering is the most common but you can also orienteer on skis, mountain bikes, horses, or by canoe. People with reduced mobility can also participate in versions of orienteering tailored to meet their needs.
