Official WCOC Championship Events

The 2008 edition of the WCOCs will include Sprint , Middle and Long
distance disciplines.  Details on each event such as distance and terrain can be
found on the Map Info page. Medals will be awarded in each discipline, and an unofficial champion named for each category.

Ages Classes / Courses

This event has been sanctioned as an A-meet by the Canadian Orienteering Federation.

The COF classification system will be used.   You can see the classification system here on the COF web-site with the expected winning times.
http://www.orienteering.ca/pdfs/Course_Category_guidelines.pdf

We have added a further junior class to break-down the age 12 and under class.

If you are a beginner or purely recreational orienteer - don't be scared off by the label of 'Championship', the courses are not tougher because of the championship label.  There are course difficulties and lengths for all skill levels.   By all means register for your normal age category, but if you feel you are not ready for your normal category - simply enter the 'Open' competition.  If you wish to run in a recreational / open class as opposed to the official competition, we will be posting the course lengths on the map info page so you can decide which course you would like to run.   You can also contact us and we can suggest a course suitable to your experience.

Eligibility for Western Canadian Orienteering Championship

Anyone may participate in this event. However, to be eligible for a WCOC title
you must be a resident of a western province AND a member of your provincial
orienteering association.

The following statement is from Western Canadian Orienteering Championships, Statement of Policies and Hosting Guidelines.

To be eligible for the title of Western Canadian Champion in one of the
competitive categories (and receive the accompanying trophy or plaque) a
competitor must be a Canadian citizen (or landed immigrant), a member of one
of the western associations and have resided in one of the western
provinces/territories (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, B.C., NWT, Yukon) since
September 1 of the previous year.

Interpretation: Participants who normally live in the West, but are attending
school or working elsewhere are eligible, however non-Canadians who are
traveling, studying or working in the West are not eligible. Orienteers from the
east who are attending school or working in the west are eligible if they resided
in the west as of September 1 of the previous year regardless of the date of the
Westerns. Simply “Living in Western Canada” does not constitute eligibility.
