Step by step guide to create a map, plan a course, complete it and  time it:

1.  How to create your adventure map using  Google Maps  and MS Word:
Example map: PDF Map
3. How to use your map and complete the course you planned:
2. How to create your course on your map using MS Word or (Google doc if you prefer):
Example map: MS World Map Example
4. How to time and check the course you completed with STRAVA :
WARNING: Be aware that the actual GOOGLE MAP may not exactly be the same as your current state of your neighbourhood. The Google map images might be outdated, or you might have some new development in your area, especially if you are in a newly established community. If you find that the images don’t match the current state, try to find another close by area which may work better.

How to make it more fun:
Are you competitive or just want to add some challenge?
First create a map with a course. Then create a family or friends challenge to race each other on the map. If your want to complete and existing course see the Neighbourhood Challenges at the bottom.

Family Challenge:
  • Start  5-10 min apart from your family members (fastest person goes last) and see who finishes first.
  • For families with younger kids you can do “two teams” for your family (one parent  and one kid on each team). Each team can create a map, than both teams complete both maps. You can time yourself and add the time together and see who is the fastest. You can use  STRAVA  to time yourself  if you are competitive.

Friends Challenge:
  • Create  a map in your community and ask your friend to create one in their community. (Agree about the approximate length or time it should take to complete it).
  • First complete your own map (make sure it’s safe).
  • Email your map to your friend (swap maps by email) than you both can complete the other person’s map. Time both courses  and add up the time and see who has the fastest total time.
  • Complete the courses at different times (not together).

Neighborhood Challenges :
  • Create a map in your community and send it to us: [email protected]
  • We will post the map so people can print it and complete it. ( See below the posted maps)
  • We will create a log where anyone can add their time to see how they did if they want to compare it or just simple show that they have completed the challenge. You can ad it as a walking time or runig time.

Timing the courses:
  1. Use the honorary system and time it with your watch.
  2. Use official timing: time yourself and check your correct route by using  STRAVA.  Download the Strava app on your phone at home. You will only need internet to upload your course after you finish it and you can do that in your home. Watch the Strava tutorial above  #4.
  •  Strava is a GPS tracking app which doesn’t use data for timing your course. It will show your completed course and time.  You will be able to record your course and time  than you can  use it to compare with the map you created and see if the course was done right.
