2024 
Alberta Orienteering Forest Training Camp 2024
 Stoney Creek Provincial Recreation Area, Kananaskis, AB
July 6 2024 - July 7 2024
FWOC and the AOA are hosting a two-day summer training camp at Lusk Creek, Kananaskis, utilizing the excellent maps and superb terrain from the 2022 WCOC. This camp is specifically designed for forest orienteering training, offering valuable preparation for upcoming competitive events.
On Sunday, there will be a separate Forest 101 session, open to anyone (12+) with city park experience who is ready to advance their orienteering skills and gain familiarity with terrain and land features. FOREST 101 participants need to be comfortable going off trail.
  • Date: July 6-7, 2023
  • Forest 101, Intermediate and Advanced adults
  • Youth 12 years and older are welcome with adult supervision (see Minors’ Policy below *)
  • Accommodation: There are limited units available at the Lusk Creek Group campground which will be on a first-come first-served basis.
  • Everyone will be using the group camping area for parking and staging
  • Food: Participants will provide their own food during the camp
  • Training activities, coaching, maps, and opportunities for socializing will be provided.
Camp Program:
(The exact time and meeting location will be updated and emailed to the registered participants.)
  • July 5th Friday evening for campers check in at Stoney Creek group campground
  • July 6th Saturday AM session intermediate & advanced
  • July 6th Saturday PM session intermediate & advanced 
  • July 6th Saturday afternoon BBQ and social at the campground after the training session (all are welcome, non-campers too).
  • July 7th Sunday AM session intermediate & advanced
  • July 7th Sunday, separate AM session: FOREST 101.
COST:
1. Weekend activity pass: $50 per personThis will have all training activities + BBQ included, with no accommodation.
2. Weekend activity + camping for 2 nights (Friday & Saturday) + BBQ: $130 per person. We have 15 units at this price. If you want to share the camping unit with family or a friend one person signs up for the unit camping option, the other can sign up for the activity only. One unit can have a car, a large tent or two small single tents.
3. Forest 101 session: $20 Sunday AM (welcome to join for Saturday BBQ too.)

SAFETY and CANCELLATION Policies:
  • WE ARE IN BEAR COUNTRY: AOA Bear spray policy is in effect.
  • Visit our website for safety recommendations and more information about wildlife risks.
  • Please see the AOA Air Quality Policy for event cancelation in case of a wildfire smoke situation.
Details for age limit and experience:
Youth (aged 12 years and older) who are comfortable running an advanced course in a city park, but have also participated in forest events, are welcome. This event is not suited for young kids or beginners.

*Attendance of Minors Policy for this event:
The camp organizer will not provide child supervision during the camp.
Youth between 12 and 17 years of age must be attending with a designated adult who is responsible for that junior for the duration of the camp 24/7. The coaching is intended for adults, so should any youth need modification and shadowing to that training that must be provided by the supervising adult.


If a child is under 12 years of age and wants to attend with their family, they are welcome but no separate training activities or supervision will be provided.

​AOC 2023 - Alberta Orienteering Championships

2023 AOC in the Redwater Natural Area organized by EOOC
Don’t feel daunted by the name – this will be a lively event suitable for everyone, from beginners to experts. We are offering courses for all ages and skill levels, including kids, families, groups, and competitive runners. Plus, there will be a free BBQ to enjoy. Join us for some great orienteering fun! Registration details coming soon.
  • This may be a Canada Cup event (sanctioning has been applied for) with Middle distance and Long distance races, but no Sprint.
  • There will be appropriate courses for competitive age-based categories for men and women, from 10-and-younger, to 85 plus.
  • Beginner and intermediate courses will be available for recreational orienteers as Open categories. Pairs/groups may enter too.

​FWOC and the AOA are hosting a 3-day spring training camp in Cranbrook using the fantastic maps and great terrain from the 2022 COCs.
  • Date: May 19-22, 2023
  • Intermediate and advanced adults
  • Youth 12 years and older are welcome (see Minors’ Policy below *)
  • Accommodation: College of the Rockies, Cranbrook campus
  • Food: Participants will provide their own food during the camp
  • Training activities, coaching, maps and opportunities for socializing will be provided​
Details for age limit and experience:
This camp is planned for Intermediate and Advanced adults. All participants must be members of an orienteering club and have orienteered outside of the city (e.g. Rumsey, Connop Creek, Dalmuir, Morningside or other forest events). Youth (aged 12 years and older) who are comfortable running an advanced course in a city park, but have also participated in forest events, are welcome.
*Attendance of Minors Policy:
The camp organizer will not provide child supervision during the camp.
Youth between 12 and 17 years of age must be attending with a designated adult who is responsible for that junior for the duration of the camp 24/7. The parent or supervising adult must provide help with any extra coaching to their minors, as needed. The coaching is intended for adults, so should any youth need modification and shadowing to that training that must be provided by the supervising adult.
